First Automated Elections in the Philippines
Monday, May 10, 2010, 5:10 PM
I'm glad I voted today.

Although the computerization of election 2010 made the counting and canvassing faster, this was the longest I've had to wait before I could cast my ballot. It took us almost two hours before we received our "Congratulations" from the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machine. The clustered precincts may have been one of the factors of the delay or maybe it was the lack of manpower and training of the members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI). But the efforts of the PPCRV and Liberal Party volunteers made me more considerate about the situation.

As a former NAMFREL volunteer, I can say that the effort required by our contribution to this election via PPCRV was less hectic, physically. COMELEC was not so cooperative in making the source code used by Smartmatic available for scrutiny. Even though the law allows "any interested party to do an independent source code review of the software", it still took a Supreme Court Ruling to order the COMELEC to release the source code days before the election. Justice delayed is justice denied.

While waiting in line, I realized that the past elected leaders did not prioritize education. This was evidenced by the deteriorating facilities in the public school where we voted in for the past three national elections.

Oh well.. I am still crossing my fingers and praying that good things will come to this country.
